So You Want to Be a Scribe?
Part I: Calligraphy

Instructor: Aurelia Colleoni a’Buccacurno

Want to get started with scribal? Start with calligraphy. Play around with a couple of hands and find what feels right for you. You will learn how to write your SCA name, while also learning how to continue practicing on your own. We will be teaching both right handed and left handed scribes.

I will provide pens and ink for people to play around with. If you would like to get your own supplies, please contact me and I will help you order the appropriate materials.

So You Want to Be a Scribe?
Part II: Illumination

Instructor: Aurelia Colleoni a’Buccacurno

You do not have to have taken the first Scribal class to take this one. Learn how to use gauche, the painting medium of choice for EK Scribes. We will learn how to paint classic acanthus leaves, a common element in illuminated manuscripts. Finish your handwritten SCA name with a beautiful border of leaves. This class will give you the confidence and know-how to create your own.

I will provide the materials necessary to get started. If you would like to bring your own brushes and gauche, please feel free. If you have any questions about purchasing materials, please contact me and I will lead you in the right direction.

  • Maximum participants: 10
  • Maximum observers: 5

The Book Curse

Instructor: Alienor Hathaway

Manuscript and books were extremely valuable in period. This class will examine the medieval security system written by scribes to protect their work: the anathema or book curse.
